If anyone ever tells you that they know exactly what their purpose is, I think they are misleading you. Purpose is an ever evolving thing that happens as a result of seeking it out. I don’t believe you will ever know exactly what your purpose is because purpose requires faith and there is always more to learn. There isn’t a sheet you get when you are born that tells you “Hey this is what you are supposed to do with every day, week, month, and year of your life.” And no God is not going to drop a purpose bomb on your life.
Purpose comes as a result of moving forward on your gut feelings and intuition. It comes from figuring out what your gifts are and taking action within the area of your giftedness. For example, I used to study video production and I loved it. But the problem was I wasn’t any good at it. I just worked hard. It was not my area of giftedness. It just so happens that sometimes what we love to do the most is aligned with our giftedness.
I am addressing this because after speaking at an event recently someone in the audience asked about purpose and what if we don’t know exactly what it is? I think that is a great question because many of us think we have to know exactly what it is when in reality it is an ever evolving process. Many of the things I wrote down a little over a year ago that I thought might have to do with my purpose, through seeking and taking action, I have found have nothing to do with my purpose.
I feel as if I know that I am supposed to write books and speak because I am gifted in these areas. No I am not New York Times Best Selling or international speaking quality yet but I am above average in these areas so if I continue to work hard I have the potential to be of that quality. I don’t know all the details of what I am supposed to write or speak about or how all this will come about but I believe as I continue to write and speak God will direct me and make that more clear to me.
Its not in my plan, but 20 years from now I could pastor a church in Europe and write books in that capacity. Who knows, that could happen. Knowing that will only come from seeking and continue to take action in the areas of my giftedness. The more I write the more God reveals. The more I speak the more God reveals what I am supposed to do and how I am supposed to go about my speaking. None of this is ever 100% certain either. There is always a level of uncertainty involved. Clarity comes from action, and clarity is the key to breakthroughs in life especially the area of purpose.
After a year of writing blogs, I finally got an idea on what my first book is going to be about and how that can drive my speaking career. What if I just sat around not writing blogs and just thinking about the topic of my first book? I don’t think this clarity would have come. Its just a gut feeling, an intuition, or that small voice inside telling me to go the direction I am going. So stop waiting, and start doing and pay attention to the clarity that comes because it will come and when it does the fun begins.
And always remember do it because YOU ARE WORTH IT!
