We are never really fearing what we think we are fearing. Most of the time we think we are fearing not having enough money to pay the bills or failure or making the wrong decision. In reality we are really fearing leaving our old self behind and stepping into our new self. Everyone who I have talked to who has sky dived, had a ton of fear before jumping out of the airplane. Days leading up to it they were scared. As they got on the plane they were FREAKED OUT. Right before the jumped they were full of fear. But as soon as they jumped ALL their fear went away. When they were free falling, they felt completely free. This is a great example of any type of fear we have. We think we fear the act of actually sky diving but in reality we fear leaving our old self behind and stepping into our new self. If that wasn’t the case then they would be full off fear from the second they jumped out of the airplane to the second they hit the ground but instead they felt completely free. This is exactly how I felt when I quit my job and when I dropped out of college. In both scenarios I thought I was afraid of not having enough money and of not being able to find an income quick enough. I thought I was afraid of failing. But once the door shut behind me as I left the company I worked at, I felt so free. Fear was completely gone! What I realized in that moment was I wasn’t afraid of failing, I wasn’t afraid of not having enough money in the bank account, I was afraid of stepping into my greatness. I was afraid of stepping into my new self and leaving my old life behind.
Think about a time in your life when you were full of fear but you took action anyways. Maybe it was when you jumped off the high dive for the first time. What were you really afraid of? You thought you were afraid of heights. But really you were afraid of leaving the old self and becoming someone new. Thats what we are all afraid of. We are all afraid of becoming. We are afraid of a rebirth in our life that we intrinsically know will happen when we burst through fear. I was talking to someone recently who has some BIG dreams. They contacted me with questions about how to break through fear, step outside their comfort zone, so they could chase their dream. I have obviously made some radical decisions in my life, that weren’t popular, to chase after what I wanted so they wanted to ask me how I bursted through that fear. This person has dreams to become a best selling author and to run a worldwide ministry/organization that helps people recover from natural disasters. They have a plan for what they want to do, but is afraid of stepping into the unknown where things aren’t easy and comfortable. They have a good paying job and things are easy. In reality, this person is not afraid of not having enough money or not being able to find a new job or new friends, this person was afraid of becoming. They are afraid of leaving the old life behind and stepping into a new life. I told this person that once they understand what they are truly fearing its much easier to move forward.
In the end, what we want is freedom. What we want is to not be controlled by fear. We want freedom. The truth is freedom happens when you jump off the airplane despite the fear you feel. Freedom happens when you decide to chase after that dream you’ve always wanted. Freedom happens when you decide to quit that job that is holding you back. Freedom is on the other side of fear. Freedom happens when you choose to be reborn into who you were created to become which only happens when you decide to act in spite of fear. Its the greatest feeling when you step through fear because you step into a whole new world. A world where you start to take control. A world where you choose to believe in yourself. This is the world we all need to experience. Society has convinced us to be comfortable, safe, and ordinary, in reality you aren’t supposed to live a comfortable life, you aren’t supposed to live a safe life, and you aren’t ordinary. Fear has held you back from the decisions you know you should make. I implore you to burst through that fear because on the other side is freedom. On the other side is a rebirth and discovering who you truly are!
