I have been called illogical so many times in my life and honestly I wish people would call me it more. It shows me that I am on the right track. If I am making logical decisions then I know I am choosing average. I am choosing safe. Logical and smart are other words for playing it safe and having no guts to take a chance. Any one who has ever done something great with their life who has chased after their dreams has made illogical decisions. The problem is we compare ourselves to the rest of the world around us and the majority of the world is not chasing their dreams. The majority of the world is playing it safe. The majority of the world is full of fear and makes all their decisions based on fear. However if we look at the people that we admire that have chased their dreams. The people that we make movies about. The Rudy Ruettigers, the Martin Luther Kings, and the Thomas Edisons of the world, they ALL made completely illogical decisions that made no sense to the world around them. None of them played it safe. Not of them lived the comfortable life. Not of them made “smart” decisions. Yet in the end we call them geniuses. In the end we make movies and write books about them. In the end we admire them.
When I dropped out of college, everyone called me illogical and crazy and stupid. Most of my classmates thought I was completely illogical. However, most of them call me a genius now. Many of them told me they wish they did what I did, that they wish they had the guts to drop out and start their career. I knew a college degree nowadays doesn’t mean much. I knew that my dream was more powerful than that piece of paper. I knew it wasn’t worth the money and the time. At the time many people thought I was crazy because they feared not playing it safe and smart. Four and a half years later its a different story. When I was chasing my dream growing up to play soccer at Duke many people called me illogical. Many people doubted my decisions. Many made fun of me. I didn’t end up playing at Duke but I ended up playing in a Final Four and for one of the top teams in the country. When I quit my “good” corporate job, many called me illogical. Many people are doubting me and my abilities to go and create the life I want. My response is always, NO DUH! Chasing your dream doesn’t make sense to the world. If you want to go all in on chasing your dreams you have to make completely illogical decisions that don’t make sense to the world around you but you know are right in your heart.
What I want you to do is become completely illogical with your life. I want you to stop being “smart” and become a genius. It takes a long time for anyone to call you a genius but in the end people will. I want you stop doing what makes sense, and start following your heart. Your heart knows the true path, your head is instead full of fear, which only leads you to safe, boring, and comfortable. When you start to chase your dreams people will call you illogical, when they do you know you are on the right track. The more they call you it the better!
