It was a rainy October night in southern Ohio. I was sitting out in the rain, soccer shoes still on, scoreboard showed 2-1 to the opponent, everyone had left the field about 30 minutes ago, tears streaming down my face, and my coach comes up to me. He asks, “Whats wrong Sam.” I say coach we just lost the third game in a row, I got double teamed the entire game, the teams not winning and I am not performing. If I don’t pick it up coach, I am not going to break all the school records and we aren’t going to have a successful season. His next words were profound, “Sam, you can either let adversity break you, or you can let it make you.” My dream that season was to break all the records and to win back to back sectional championships as a team which had never been done before at Lancaster High School. That was the third or fourth game in a row that I had not performed well enough for our team to win and I certainly wasn’t on track to break all the individual records. My dreams were tumbling right before me. Have you been there before? Have you ever chased a dream and right in the middle of chasing that dream all of a sudden everything goes wrong and it seems like your dream isn’t going to come true?
The reality is this happens to everyone who chases a dream. What I have noticed though is its the people that have a dream that actually overcome the adversity. Its the people that have something to fight for that overcome adversity. Whats your dream? Whats your purpose? Most people who don’t have a specific dream let adversity break them and those who have a specific dream, most of the time let adversity make them. I went on that season to break all the records and our team ended up winning the sectional championship. I became a better player because of that adversity. I became a better person and a better leader because of that adversity. This is why I am so obsessed with inspiring people to chase their dreams because I know if they chase after the organic dream they have for their life they will have to overcome adversity and its in that process that they become more of the person they were created to become. Earl Nightingale says that “you don’t get in life what you want, you get in life what you are.” We all have to become the person that we were created to become in order to achieve the dreams we have for our life and its adversity that makes us into that person.
I want to tell you that your dream is possible. You are capable. You were endowed with the seeds of greatness by our creator to do great things with your life. You need to get a dream and chase it so that when you hit that inevitable adversity you overcome it and become the person you were created to become. The world tells you to shy away from adversity. The world tells you that if you are facing trials that their must be something wrong. I am telling you the truth, and that is you need that adversity. You need the challenge because you will never achieve your dreams unless you become the person it will take to achieve those dreams. Get moving my friend. You only get one life. Stop wasting another day not knowing what you want and not becoming the person you were created to become.
