Time: Why Do We Waste It

I often say “The only thing you are guarunteed is the rest of your life, so dont waste it.” Its my saying. Its what really pushes me and motivates me. Time by far is the most valuable thing we possess and we seem to waste a lot of it. Why do we waste the most valuable thing we have? Why do we choose not to maximize all 24 hours in our day? I find it interesting when people who aren’t going after anything in their life tell me they dont have time for something. These people are spending the majority of their time doing things that dont matter, arent moving them forward, aren’t productive. Its like when a college kid tells me their busy. I believe them 0%. Their concept of busy and time 99% of the time is completely skewed. They spend more time thinking about all the homework they have to do then they do actually completing the homework. I can say this because ive been there!

The average American spends nearly 5 hours a day on their phone and 28 hours a week watching television (almost a full-time job!). Thats 37.5% of your week. See we think we’re busy but really we’re busy spending our time doing nothing. If time is our most valuable possession, and if we are truly unsure how much of our most valuable possession we have left, why would any one in their right mind waste any of it? Why wouldnt we be intentional with every minute or hour of our life? The only answer is we dont value our time. The reason we dont value our time is because we dont value ourselves. The reason we dont value ourselves is because we dont have purpose. We dont have a vision we are moving towards or a mission we are completing.

I would argue that if you took the time to seek out your life’s mission, if you made finding it the most important thing in your life, once you found that mission a light bulb would go off in your head. You would realize that you weren’t created by accident but you were created with specific talents and abilities for a specific purpose and all of a sudden you would value yourself and your life more. This would cause you to dramatically increase the value you put on your time. I heard someone call it “non-refundable minutes.” He is so obsessed with the minutes in his life because he knows he will never get them back. Valuing your life and time more would cause you to cut out all the things you do that are a waste of your most valuable possession.

The problem is most people dont take the time it takes and the energy it takes to seek and ultimately find out what their life’s mission is. You will never truly value yourself, your time, your life unless you know without a shadow of doubt that you were created and engineered for a specific purpose and mission. You were created to have the desires of your heart, you were created with the ability to create what you want in your life. But if you never find out what that is you will spend the rest of your life wasting it. And the truth is the only thing you are guaranteed is the rest of your life, so I recommend not wasting it.
