A good friend of mine said something recently that I believe is so true. She said it because she was experiencing it at that time in her life, I immediately wrote it down as I thought it was brilliant! She said “It’s hard to see through with what you believe when it is contrary to the world around you.” She had been making some decisions in her life to start pursuing every day what she wanted for her life but mentioned that she had been putting off creating the life that she wanted because doing something that is outside the norm of society many times is frightening. I am extremely proud of her because despite her fears she decided to take a leap of faith and to start pursuing her dreams. This is something that many of us experience and for a lot of us it imprisons us for long periods of time. We see so many people around us that are not doing anything outside the norm. They get up, go to work 5 days a week and live for the weekend. In our heart though we want more, we have a dream to be and do something more. Sometimes we may think we are crazy because what we believe in our heart is contrary to the world around us.
The response I give to the fear I feel when I want to do something that is outside the norm is “Sam if you do what everyone else does you will get what everyone else gets.” What I heard when I was 20 years old that completely changed my life was “look at the masses and do the opposite.” It used to be a cool quote that I would say but it has become a conviction in my life. I try to look around in every environment I am in and look at what the masses are doing and do the opposite and I am telling you it has paid off. Let me give you a few examples, most people my age are going out and partying on the weekends, so I said I am going to do the opposite and instead I work on my goals on the weekend as a result I am a heck of a lot closer to the life I want to create. Most people watch TV in their spare time, I decided to read life changing books in my “spare” time. I haven’t had cable for 4+ years, and I am telling you its made a heck of a difference! Sure people have made fun of me, but I am telling you its made all the difference in my life.
I know it is really hard to see through with what you believe in your heart when it is contrary to the world around you. People will call you crazy. People called me crazy when I dropped out of college with a 3.9 GPA and only three semesters left. Some people still ask my if I am going to go back and finish because they think I am crazy! When you decide to get radical about your life and your dreams people will call you crazy, people will make fun of you. What you need to understand is on the inside people admire you and want to be like you. They wish they had the courage that you have to stand up for what you believe in and over time many people will end up coming along the ride with you. Your life is to valuable to give into the fear that is imprisoning you from creating the life that you want. Its never too early and its never to late to find your purpose and live on it every day.
