The Most Profitable Thing You Can Do

Lost? Unsure what you want to do with the rest of your life? Unhappy with yourself?  Lacking self confidence? We’ve all been there. I have been there for long periods of time in my life. Years. Depressed. No Purpose. Empty. Until one day I decided to do the most profitable thing anyone can ever do. I got to the point in my life where I was so frustrated with where I was, so unhappy, depressed, with no direction, that I simply couldn’t take it anymore. I had to take control. I had to change because it was the only option. So I did the most profitable thing any one person can do. Maybe you’ve already done it but most likely you haven’t. Most people don’t take the time to do it. Most people are ok with mediocrity, ok with living with no real purpose, ok with the normal 9-5 and live for the weekend life. Or maybe they’re not ok with it, they’ve just convinced themselves that that’s all they can be and that anything else is a pipe dream. I’ll go with option #2. Most people just choose to be ok with it because they don’t believe they can rally have more. Well I don’t know about you but I simply can’t accept that for my life and I believe that if you do the most profitable thing you could ever do you won’t be able to accept it either.

What did I do? Wait for it… It’s so complex, breathtaking, truly unthinkable… I sat down in my room at my desk with a pad of paper and a pen. No phone, completely alone, with no possible distraction. I started writing. I began to write with a limitless mindset answering the questions, What do I want my life to look like? What do I want to accomplish? Who the heck do I want to become? What do I want to be remembered for? I sat there for over two hours just thinking and writing. I gave myself permission to dream like I did as a kid. To be honest, nothing that I wrote really surprised me. It was all things I had thought before but putting it to paper made it real. It wasn’t just a far away thought it was a real tangible thing.

See when you put things to paper it becomes real. Jim Carey, before he was famous, when he was an unknown, completely broke financially, no tangible success, wrote himself a check for $10 Million Dollars for acting services dated five years in the future and within three years he earned a spot in a film paying him $10 Million Dollars. When you have the courage to not only think about what you want with your life but actually put it on paper and start taking action, everything changes. After the two hours of writing I simplified it all into three things: short term goals, a long term vision, and a faith statement of who I am when I leave the earth. What I mean by that is I decided who I wanted to be and wrote exactly that so I could read it to myself everyday reminding myself of who I am working to become. From then on everything changed. EVERYTHING. No longer was I lost, no longer was I depressed, no longer was I unhappy. Why? Because I had purpose. I had vision. And it was organic and mine. It wasn’t influenced by anyone or anything else. I now had a reason to wake up in the morning. And I was moving towards what I wanted for my life, not what society or any one else wanted for my life.

No one is lost because of the job they hate, or because their parents aren’t supportive of them, or because they’ve been a “failure” their entire life, or because their financially broke, or because their marriage is a mess, or whatever reason they think they are lost. Someone is lost because they have no idea what they want. People lack self-confidence when they have no vision. People are unhappy with themselves because they know they could be much more. Someone is depressed because they aren’t working towards anything and therefore they don’t have purpose. People become empty when they have no direction.

The only reason we wouldn’t not succeed in every area of our lives is because of a lack of desire. A lack of desire comes from not knowing what we want. We don’t know what we want because we’ve never taken the time to think about it and put it to paper. We’ve never taken the time to put it to paper because we don’t really believe that we could accomplish the things we truly want. We don’t believe in ourselves because we’ve believed the lies society has told us; settle for less, being rich is bad, successful people are lucky, you aren’t a child of god created and engineered for success, blah blah blah. It’s all lies. This can all change if we make the decision.

When we don’t know what we want we will get pulled in every direction, we will take advice from the wrong people, we will let our life completely slip by. I suggest to you today, that no matter where you are in your life, old or young, no excuses create two hours in your life where you can sit alone with no distraction and really find out what you want with your life, who you want to be, and how you want to live. Then create an action plan for making those things a reality in your life. This is without a doubt the most profitable thing you can ever do in your life. No excuses. The only thing you are guaranteed is the rest of your life, why waste it?
